Match the treatment to your water

A softener removes hardness, carbon addresses disinfectant-related taste and odor, and tankless RO treats drinking water at a dedicated faucet. These functions complement each other but are not interchangeable. Well-water and sediment concerns need their own evaluation.

Whole Home Water Softener

A dedicated whole-home softener focuses on calcium and magnesium hardness. It uses a resin tank, a metered control valve and a brine tank, making it a different tool from a carbon filter or a salt-free conditioner.

Limit new scale deposits: Ion exchange reduces the hardness minerals entering treated plumbing. Water heaters, shower fittings and dishwasher surfaces then receive water with less potential to form mineral deposits.
Reduce hard-water soap residue: Calcium and magnesium react with soap. Removing them can improve lathering and reduce soap scum, without guaranteeing that all spots or cleaning needs disappear.

Control valve: Programmable metered valve set to your address hardness

Treatment limits: Softening does not remove chlorine/chloramine taste, disinfect water or provide RO-level dissolved-solids reduction. It can add sodium to treated water. If sodium intake matters to your household, discuss drinking-water treatment rather than assuming softened water is sodium-free.

Whole Home Carbon Filter

A dedicated carbon filter treats water on the main household line. Its primary role here is disinfectant-related taste and odor; it can be installed alongside an existing softener because carbon and resin perform different jobs.

Treat bathing and washing water: A point-of-entry filter serves the connected showers and household fixtures, not just a refrigerator dispenser. Any unfiltered branches depend on the plumbing layout.
Keep hardness treatment separate: If a working softener already handles scale, a dedicated carbon vessel can add filtration without replacing that softener solely for a taste concern.

Treatment limits: Carbon does not remove calcium and magnesium hardness or substitute for UV/RO. Do not assume removal of every chemical or health-related contaminant without model-specific performance documentation. It reduces disinfectant residual but does not disinfect downstream plumbing.

AlkaPro 800 Tankless RO

The AlkaPro 800 is CleanLine's tankless under-sink reverse osmosis option. It uses a membrane, supporting filtration and alkaline remineralization, with a digital TDS readout and filter-life indicators for everyday monitoring.

No separate storage vessel: Water is produced on demand, so a pressurized storage tank does not occupy the cabinet. The unit still needs clearance for its body, tubing and filter replacement.
Remineralization for taste: An alkaline polishing stage follows membrane treatment. It is a taste preference, not a medical claim or a guarantee of a particular pH under all conditions.

Output: Up to 800 gallons per day, tankless on demand production
Stages: Sediment and carbon composite, RO membrane, post carbon and alkaline polish

Treatment limits: Actual production depends on water pressure, temperature and feed-water conditions. RO sends reject water to drain and needs electricity for tankless operation. Contaminant-specific or certification claims require documentation for the actual model, not an assumption based on the term reverse osmosis.

Pre-Sediment Filter

A pre-sediment filter is a mechanical particle filter at the main line. It is useful when sand, silt, rust or other visible particles are present, and can protect the treatment equipment installed after it.

Protect downstream treatment: Removing particulate material ahead of a softener or drinking-water system reduces the particle load those stages have to handle. It does not remove dissolved hardness minerals.
A serviceable wear item: The cartridge can be replaced without replacing an entire treatment bed. Housing clearance and isolation access make that routine service practical.

Placement: Main line, ahead of all treatment equipment

Treatment limits: Sediment filtration is not softening, carbon adsorption, reverse osmosis or disinfection. A loaded cartridge can reduce pressure. It should not be sold as a cure for a well producing excessive sand without also investigating the source.
