A disinfection stage, not a mineral-removal filter
A whole-home UV unit exposes flowing water to ultraviolet light inside a chamber. Its role is microbiological treatment at the selected model's operating conditions; it does not soften water or remove dissolved contaminants.
No disinfectant added by the UV unit
The lamp supplies light rather than dosing chlorine into the water. UV itself does not add a chemical taste or alter the water's hardness.
Treat water on the household line
Installed after appropriate pretreatment, the unit can serve the household supply rather than just one drinking faucet. Sizing must account for peak flow through that line.
A defined final treatment step

How the equipment works
Water passes a UV lamp protected by a quartz sleeve inside the chamber. Effectiveness depends on dose, flow, water clarity and the selected unit's validated performance. Organism-specific claims must be supported by that model's documentation.
What it does not do
UV does not remove hardness, sediment, iron, chemicals or dissolved solids, and it leaves no disinfectant residual in downstream plumbing. Loss of power or unsuitable flow/water quality can compromise treatment. Do not assume an alarm or automatic shutoff is included without checking the selected model.
What we confirm before installation
We confirm water test results, pretreatment, peak household flow, power and service clearance for removing the lamp and sleeve. The exact UV model, rated conditions and manufacturer coverage belong in the quote; broad certification or lifetime-electronics claims should not substitute for those details.
Ongoing care and service
Follow the manufacturer's lamp replacement interval, clean the sleeve as directed and respond to controller warnings. Keep pretreatment maintained and investigate changes in water clarity. Equipment service does not replace follow-up microbiological testing or correction of well contamination.

How ultraviolet disinfection works

At the annual service we swap the lamp, wipe the quartz sleeve and confirm the controller is reading correct lamp hours.

Does UV change the taste of my water?
No. Ultraviolet light adds nothing to the water, so taste, odor and mineral content are unchanged.
How often does the lamp need replacing?
Once a year. Output fades before the lamp fails visibly, so we replace on schedule rather than waiting for it to go dark.
Do I need UV on Austin city water?
Generally no. Municipal supplies are already disinfected. UV is for wells, rainwater collection and small private systems.
