Why sediment matters more here than most places
Central Texas water carries limestone fines almost everywhere, and older parts of the metro add decades of pipe rust to that. On a well you get real sand. None of it belongs inside a resin bed or against an RO membrane.
A cartridge costs a fraction of a media replacement or a fouled membrane, which is why we recommend a pre-filter on essentially every install.
Changing it is a five minute job
Close the bypass, release the pressure, unscrew the sump, drop in a new cartridge and open the line back up. We show every homeowner how to do it, and we will do it for you on a service visit if you would rather not.
If the cartridge is coming out black or gritty well before schedule, that is useful information and usually points to a line issue worth investigating.

Do I need a pre-sediment filter on city water?
It is optional on newer municipal lines and strongly recommended on older neighborhoods and every well. It costs far less than replacing fouled resin or a membrane.
How often are cartridges replaced?
Most run about twelve months in Central Texas. Heavy sediment or well water can shorten that to six.
Will it reduce my water pressure?
Not when it is sized correctly and changed on schedule. A neglected cartridge is what causes pressure loss.
