Catch particles in a replaceable cartridge
A pre-sediment filter is a mechanical particle filter at the main line. It is useful when sand, silt, rust or other visible particles are present, and can protect the treatment equipment installed after it.
Less grit reaching fixtures
A cartridge selected for the source water can capture particles before they collect in aerators, valves and appliance inlets. Its rating determines which sizes it can capture.
Protect downstream treatment
Removing particulate material ahead of a softener or drinking-water system reduces the particle load those stages have to handle. It does not remove dissolved hardness minerals.
A serviceable wear item
The cartridge can be replaced without replacing an entire treatment bed. Housing clearance and isolation access make that routine service practical.
Useful clues about the supply
Unexpectedly rapid cartridge loading can signal changing source conditions or a line problem. Recording those changes is more useful than simply installing progressively finer cartridges.
How the equipment works
Incoming water passes through a cartridge in a large filter housing. The selected cartridge's micron rating, dimensions and flow capacity matter; a finer cartridge is not automatically better if it restricts household flow.
What it does not do
Sediment filtration is not softening, carbon adsorption, reverse osmosis or disinfection. A loaded cartridge can reduce pressure. It should not be sold as a cure for a well producing excessive sand without also investigating the source.
What we confirm before installation
We review particle loading, line size, household flow and available space to remove the housing sump. The quote identifies the housing and compatible cartridge, placement ahead of downstream equipment and the isolation/bypass arrangement. Prefiltration is optional unless explicitly included in your scope.
Ongoing care and service
Replace based on the cartridge instructions, sediment loading and pressure changes rather than waiting for a complete blockage. Isolate the supply and relieve pressure before opening the housing. Use the specified cartridge and seal, and check for leaks after service.

Why sediment matters more here than most places
Sand, silt or rust particles can come from source-water conditions or plumbing. If particles are present, a properly selected cartridge can reduce the load reaching downstream treatment equipment.
A cartridge costs a fraction of a media replacement or a fouled membrane, which is why we recommend a pre-filter on essentially every install.
Changing it is a five minute job
Close the bypass, release the pressure, unscrew the sump, drop in a new cartridge and open the line back up. We show every homeowner how to do it, and we will do it for you on a service visit if you would rather not.
If the cartridge is coming out black or gritty well before schedule, that is useful information and usually points to a line issue worth investigating.

Do I need a pre-sediment filter on city water?
It is optional on newer municipal lines and strongly recommended on older neighborhoods and every well. It costs far less than replacing fouled resin or a membrane.
How often are cartridges replaced?
Most run about twelve months in Central Texas. Heavy sediment or well water can shorten that to six.
Will it reduce my water pressure?
Not when it is sized correctly and changed on schedule. A neglected cartridge is what causes pressure loss.
