Removing calcium and magnesium helps limit new scale on shower fittings, water-heating surfaces and appliances supplied by the treated line. Existing deposits can still require cleaning or service.
Address taste and shower odor
Carbon filtration works on disinfectant-related taste and odor in addition to the resin's hardness treatment. Chloramine performance depends on the actual media and contact time, not simply the presence of a black tank.
A simpler equipment footprint
Combining the two treatment functions in one vessel can suit a garage with limited wall space. Room is still needed for the brine tank, bypass, drain connection and future service access.

How the equipment works
Resin performs ion exchange while the carbon media provides filtration for taste and odor. A programmable metered valve manages regeneration; the brine tank supplies the salt solution that restores the resin's softening capacity.
What it does not do
The XL is not reverse osmosis, UV disinfection or a dedicated iron/sulfur treatment system. Fine-particle filtration may require a separate sediment cartridge. Larger peak-flow demands may favor separate softening and carbon vessels after sizing is reviewed.
What we confirm before installation
We review hardness, simultaneous fixture use, service-line size, available placement and the condition of any existing loop. The installation needs an approved drain route, power for the control valve and enough access to refill salt and operate the bypass. A no-loop installation is scoped separately.
Ongoing care and service
Monitor salt, check for leaks or a salt bridge, and keep the valve programmed to the household's actual water use. Carbon and resin performance should be assessed when water quality changes; media replacement is not the same as refilling salt.

Warranty and guarantee
Eligible tanks and dry parts carry lifetime coverage. The control valve, circuit board and filtration media carry 5 years under the applicable terms; installation workmanship carries 1 year. Salt and scheduled consumables are not lifetime-covered items.

Does the XL filter remove chloramine or only chlorine?
Both. The carbon media is selected for chloramine reduction, which is what most Austin area utilities actually use for disinfection.
How often do I add salt?
Most Central Texas households add salt every two to three months. The metered valve regenerates on demand rather than on a timer, which keeps salt use low.
Can it be installed if I do not have a softener loop?
Yes. Our licensed plumber can add a loop at the main line. We confirm the location and the price before install day.
